CHAPTER TWELVE

Early Friday morning, Wagner walked out of the Freeze and looked at the sky. The farmers in the cafe had been talking about getting to plant their cotton pretty soon if the weather held. The ground was beginning to dry and, according to the experts in the cafe, the skies were going to stay clear and the weather warm through the weekend. He climbed in the plain-looking car and pulled onto the highway. He’d make a sweep through Moores Point, stop at Cat Lake to see if the Parkers were home yet, then make an overnight run to Jackson.

He made his first stop on the north end of Moores Point at Dennison’s Store. He managed to learn that the black man who had warned him about evil was named E. C. Perriman—they called him Doc—but that was all the information he managed to pick up. A stop at Scooter Hall’s service station yielded less. He gave up on Moores Point and headed south.
